Three’s Company

This stunning Makwa Lake residence has not one, not two, but three outdoor fireplaces. While it seems excessive, keep in mind that the three-storey home was designed to comfortably fit 20+ people, or as interior designer Cristina Rivett puts it, “as many guests as possible” during vacation season. Trading Spaces

Wine and Spirits Editor Neal McLennan accidentally fell in love with this Palm Springs home right after finishing a renovation of a different Palm Springs home, and we don’t blame him. Just look at the backyard! Surrounded by miles of steep San Jacinto mountains, it’s the perfect setting for this pergola and outdoor fireplace; an Anthropologie rug and Estate Sale Company rope coffee add just the right amount of texture to the area. The Longest Yard

Backyards tend to get all the love and attention, but that’s not the case here. Designer Denise Ashmore of Project 22 Design worked with the team at Measured Architecture on the renovation of her own Vancouver home, making sure to capitalize views, maintain privacy and take creative advantage of outdoor spaces on both sides of the property. Douglas Park and the North Shore mountains are visible from the front yard’s terraced deck, which is complete with a modern fire pit. Check out the rest of this airy home reno.

Twilight Zone

Herschel Supply Co. founder Lyndon Cormack wanted his North Vancouver home to have “lots of zones” and “different places to hang out.” Mission accomplished! The property boasts a putting green, climbing wall, basketball court, sauna, hot tub, mega-sized chess set and a private ceramic studio—plus this serene spot for winding down at night. New York Minute

The team at Karly Kristina Design were asked to imbue this 2,500-square-foot Port Moody home with a sense of ‘casual elegance,’ and found the Hamptons to be the ultimate source of inspiration. The patio is where this influence shines the brightest, thanks to the addition of wicker pendants and an elegant fire table. Peek inside this waterfront abode.

It’s Always Sunny

Architect Laura Killam designed this patio so that it would capture the warm evening sun, but we think it would be just as enjoyable to sit out here on colder nights. The fireplace, clad in the same rough-sawn cedar boards as the rest of the home’s exterior, is sure to give off a lot of heat—and cozy vibes. Tour this off-grid cabin near Desolation Sound.

Cabin Fever

This Okanagan residence simultaneously reimagines and pays homage to the classic B.C. cabin. It’s finished with low-maintenance materials and there’s a distinct indoor/outdoor flow—not to mention, the firepit echos a campfire. “We never wanted it to be kitschy,” says designer Robert Bailey. “Everything had to be easy to live with, but all in an elegantly finished and sophisticated package.” See more of this modern Naramata home.
