For most families, the kitchen is the heart of the home—no wonder, then, that Vancouver designer Ayshea Mojadidi, principal of Aysh Design, started there with the design of this 4,000-square-foot, six bedroom new build from MSG Developments, and worked her way out.

“The kitchen sets the tone for the entire home,” says Mojadidi. And one look at the warm, sophisticated, effortlessly elegant room and it’s easy to see this is the design vision in its purest form.

In the kitchen, dark cabinetry and stained white oak pop against crisp white walls. A mix of glossy and matte backsplash tiles create contrast and dimension; brass sconces and hardware bring the warmth. Though the finishes here are dark, the space still feels light and airy thanks to ample natural light—and a warm, white quartz countertop. (The hood fan, wrapped in a soft white plaster, brings another hit of brightness.)

A large, open-concept island (illuminated by Regina Andrew pendant lights) was designed with entertaining in mind, and no detail was left unconsidered in the beautiful cooking space. A custom black-metal glass door separates a main kitchen from the prep zone; under the cabinets, LED lights illuminate the chef’s workstation. A large, arched cabinet is designed with reeded glass, and sits atop the quartz: an attention-grabbing shelving unit that hides away the clutter while standing out.

A panel-ready dishwasher and refrigerator are hidden behind cabinet doors, while the black gas range from Fischer and Paykel is a showstopper.

In the prep kitchen, Mojadidi choose Benjamin Moore Natural Cream and nickel fixtures to create a subtle, neutral theme. Chevron-pattern tiles on the floor add a hint of personality to a workhorse of a room.

The entryway is open and airy, grounded by thoughtfully crafted pieces — smoked-glass hanging pendant lamps, a textured console table. It’s a space capped off by a statement-making custom, reeded-glass door, complete with a brass handle from Bradford Hardware. “The moment you walk in the front door, there’s a welcoming energy,” says Mojadidi.

In the living room, it’s all about texture: white velvet sofas mingle with a plaster-finished fireplace, a large Restoration Hardware oak table, and a natural wool rug. The bathroom, meanwhile, features a steam shower, makeup vanity, soaking tub, radiant floor heating and towel warmer for that spa feel; an attached walk-in closet is separated by a glass door.

Though the finishes throughout are modern—with a clean black-and-white palette—there’s a classical elegance at play here too, thanks to details like plaster finishes and arched doorways. Reeded glass in the front doorway and cabinetry, as well as gleaming brass accents, add a subtle vintage texture into the otherwise modern home. “Anything that was incorporated into the space needed to provide longevity and feel approachable, timeless and most of all, balanced,” says Mojadidi. “The moment you walk in the front door, there’s a welcoming energy.”
