April 4 and 28The Vancouver Art Gallery’s curators, Daina Augaitis and Diana Freundl, are giving a talk about an upcoming exhibition that looks at shows from the Gallery’s history: Here Not There (1995) featured stoneware and sculpture from Vancouver-based Chinese artists, while the Young Romantics (1985) focused on figurative paintings from eight young Vancouver artists.
April 24 to 28The world’s most engaging curated talks are back in Vancouver for 2017. This year at Canada Place, the theme is “the future you.” Speakers will explore the most significant questions of our time and what our shared future might look like, from how will work, connect, interact and thrive in our world full of change. Didn’t get a ticket? Talks will be screened worldwide in cinemas.
April 28 to May 13The first of its kind in Vancouver, the Vancouver Opera Festival debuts with Otello, which brings together Shakespeare’s poetry with Verdi’s lyricism, and Dead Man Walking, based on Sister Helen Prejean’s bestselling death-row memoir.
April 7Global News’ Lesley MacDonald will once again host the consistently sold-out Women of Vision Celebration Luncheon at the Shaw Conference Centre to honor Edmonton’s most influential and inspiring women. Tickets start at $150 and include lunch, wine, live entertainment and inclusion in the event’s prize draw.
April 19 to 23Celebrate all things spring at the Fleurs de Villes Mannequin Series, an exhibit that combines high fashion and fresh blooms. For five days the Southgate Shopping Centre will play host to a collection of floral-dressed mannequins, each designed by a local florist.
April 21 to 29This might just be the most Canadian event ever. For one week, more than 60 Calgary restaurants will be serving creative poutine dishes (Korean beef with fried egg and gochujang gravy, fried-chicken-and-waffle, pulled pork topped with sesame slaw and fried alligator) to the masses. You’ll want to try one or two spots each day: for every poutine sold, Mealshare will provide a free meal to someone in need.
April 29 and 30Calling all green thumbs! Alberta’s ever-growing garden show is back April 29 through April 30 and brings with it a smorgasbord of horticulturists and plant whisperers to teach us everything we wanted to know about entomology, soil superstars and the game-changer that is fusion gardening. Tickets start at $18.
