On the banks of Skaha Lake, a home design inspired by the palette (and serenity) of the lake itself.
Even if you couldn’t see Skaha Lake from inside this Okanagan home, you can feel it: in the cloudy blue-grey cabinets, in the smooth stone shower stall, in the palette of soft grey paint. Kudos to designer Nicky Prentice for bringing the outside in.
Smart layout planning allowed for windows galore that balance expansive views with privacy from neighbours in the 2,800-square-foot space, a lakeside property belonging to a retired finance manager and small business owner. The couple wanted a house that was their primary dwelling, but felt like a vacation home upon waking up every morning, says the principal of Cochrane, Alberta-based Nik Interiors.
On the main floor, the open-concept living, kitchen and dining area acts as a hub, but spare bedrooms, the laundry room and main bathroom live here too.
Upstairs, the primary bedroom (complete with walk-in closet and ensuite, and an office space) offers a sanctuary for the homeowners. The homeowners wanted to construct a family-friendly home that also catered to their semi-retired lives, Prentice explains. and they love having the entire second level as their own private space while the main floor serves guests and daytime living.
With walls painted Benjamin Moore Grey Owl and floors decked out in white oak, Prentice has created a warm, welcoming interior. Exposed fir ceiling beams and a stone fireplace double down on the rustic-modern charm.
In the kitchen, alabaster quartz countertops are paired with dark maple and grey cabinetry; skinny, glossy white subway tiles bounce light around the space. A hidden butler's pantry provides ample storage. In the bathroom, variegated tumbled stone line the shower.
In palette, in materials, in location, it’s a lake house inside and outone that truly makes a splash.
